Lake with remarkable blue (I prefer to call it turquoise), caused by “rock flour” – finely ground particles of the rock brought down by the glaciers at the head o the lake and held in suspension in the melt water. The majestic beauty of this lake can be enjoyed from season to season – from the beauty of Lupins on the shores of the lake in summer to the beauty of snow capped Southern Alps reflected on the lake and snow around lake in winter. The purity of the atmosphere above Lake Tekapo, make it one of the best place in New Zealand for stargazing. Aurora Australis and Milkyway are two of many spectacular views that can be seen in the night sky in Lake Tekapo (credit to DK Eyewitness Travel New Zealand ad Astrophotography cards). I came to Lake Tekapo 8 times during my summer, winter and spring holidays. I haven’t had chance to do stargazing yet (hope can do it in the near future).
