Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire Night or Firework Night, is celebrated on 5 November with spectacular fireworks. We call it “Fireworks Over the River” in Palmerston North. The event is usually held on Anzac Park at 9 pm. The park itself is closed for public but we can see the show from down on the riverbank, the Esplanade, Summerhill Heights or anywhere in the town.
What is the history behind this celebration? Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives beneath the House of Lords on November 5th, 1605. People lit bonfires around London to celebrate this event. That was the start of annual commemoration of Guy Fawkes Night (credit to Wikipedia).
My classmates and I preferred to watch the 15-minute firework show from the Manawatu Bridge. Here are some videos from the Guy Fawkes Night that I recorded with my digital camera and uploaded them on YouTube.
